Though scientific data and clinical experience are steadily increas- ing, many uncertainties still exist about several aspects concerning etiology, pathogenesis, diagno- sis, management, and prevention of this complication. The insertion of a central Groshong line is usually done under local anesthetic by an interventional anaesthesiologist, interventional radiologist or surgeon. Throughout the procedure, ultrasound and X-rays may be used to confirm placement. When a central venous catheter is inserted, a chest radiologic examination is usually performed to confirm the position of the catheter and absence of pneumothorax.
